A strong cast led by tenor Javier Bernardo from Chicago Lyric Opera delivers a high stamina performance full of fireworks of this rarely performed gem of the Spanish Bel Canto.
'Marina': A Spanish Romantic Opera by Emilio Arrieta

Set in a Mediterranean fishing village, the composer's grand tale of true love between an orphan girl and a ship's captain much delayed by misunderstanding, was famously reworked from Arrieta's own shorter 1855 zarzuela to become one of the most beloved bel canto works of the canon. Sung in Spanish, with English supertitles, Marina also features baritone Jose Sacin, soprano Callie Schlegel and a chamber chorus. Peruvian tenor Bernardo has been dubbed a "powerhouse" singer by Chicago Now, and won a pair of prestigious awards in 2012, including one from the Bel Canto Foundation.
